The Huntr recently trimmed our whiskers at Akin Dubai (more on that here), the region’s first hipster-coveted barber located at Burj Al Salam, Trade Centre 1.
The cool UAE barber shop that wouldn’t look out of place in East London provides “hair cuts, beard tune-ups and straight razor shaves” plus a curated concept store (not to mention coffee on tap from The Sum of Us – hello!). Akin Dubai was founded by regional entrepreneur Leith Matthews, The Huntr speaks to the chap behind the new beauty destination for well-groomed gents around the UAE…
Tell us a bit more about Akin Barber & Shop?
Akin Barber & Shop takes influence from a classic New York City barbershop. Masculine yet laid back and delivered with a design conscious eye.
Why do you think Dubai needs a place like this?
With an old school and independent vibe, Akin appeals to a community of cool, urban Dubai residents.
What do you remember about going to the barber as a kid?
When I was a kid in Australia we didn’t have great barbershops unfortunately, only hairdressing salons. It was only when I moved to Dubai that I started to experience men’s grooming in another way.
How does Akin Dubai compare to other barber shops?
Akin offers an independent choice for the hip community of Dubai. We offer great quality haircuts and styling – but we are more accessible than top end hair salons. And we are dedicated to quality beard grooming, giving a highly elevated experience from what you would find at a regular street barber in Dubai.
Are there any trends dominating men’s grooming right now?
Beards and moustaches are definitely strong right now. And guys are more knowledgable about hair and more confident to go for individual styles.
