Step inside the Louvre Abu Dhabi with The Huntr

Back in 2007, the iconic Louvre in Paris announced that there would be a new Louvre museum in the UAE capital. With an opening date earmarked for 2012, the country’s art and culture fans were buzzing. Fast-forward a decade and the Louvre Abu Dhabi is finally about to open its doors…

This morning, The Huntr was treated to an exclusive preview of this architectural marvel by Jean Nouvel (quite literally, the iconic architect was there to present his new masterpiece). Located on Saadiyat Island’s new Cultural District, the Louvre is said to have cost between €83 million and €108 million to construct. Built around a gigantic silvery dome that appears as if it is floating, the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s “lid” actually weighs as much as the Eiffel Tower in Paris (approximately 7,500 tonnes). It was inspired by the cupola, which is a distinctive feature in Arabic architecture. Nouvel constructed the dome to feature 7,850 stars, and as the sun shines down on it, it creates a jaw-dropping effect within the museum, which Nouvel calls the ‘rain of light’ – this and the surrounding waters combine to create the most serene, awe-inspiring effect. It’s truly magical.

Ahead of its official opening to the public on November 11th, The Huntr is delighted to share our exclusive tour in pictures, below…
