#AbuDhabiLovesCoffee is back and bigger and better than ever for 2021. Running across 21 of the best homegrown specialty coffee concepts in the UAE capital on November 8-28th 2021 – Abu Dhabi Loves Coffee is part of Abu Dhabi Culinary Season and curated by The HUNTR.

AEH CAFE

Located at the Corniche, AEH Cafe opened just 9 months ago but already has a loyal following thanks to its faultless coffee. Small and cosy, the cafe serves up a variety of specialty coffees alongside desserts and sweet treats. Created by two friends obsessed with trying new spots for coffee and desserts, AEH uses special beans from Brazil, Columbia, and Ethiopia roasted by Blacksmith Coffee. Baristas Edward (Uganda) and Jundan (Indonesia) use the La Marzocco Linea Classic 2 Group machine and manual brews are available using V60, Kalita Wave, Chemex, Syphon, Aeropress and the Cold Drip Gater. Milk-wise AEH also has them all – full-fat dairy, low fat, oat, almond, coconut and lactose-free.

AZF

AZF uses Archers Roastery coffee beans and a high class SPIRIT coffee machine to make its beloved brews. Milk-based coffees can be made with Oatly, almond milk or fresh cow’s milk and  the food menu features all day breakfast options, alongside pasta and toasties – the latter of which are perfectly paired with coffee.

The team at AZF will be hosting Latte Art Workshops. Priced at 100AED for one hour, the workshop features 20 minutes of orientation and 40 minutes of Latte Art training. The workshops are available 12noon through to 6 pm, for one-hour slots on November 12, 13, 19, 20, 26, and 27th. Prior bookings are essential and can be done by calling +971 (0)55 936 7057.

CAFFEINO

Located at Al Bateen Marina, Caffeino is an elegant spot offering specialty coffee alongside a full food menu. Using its own blend beans from Latin America and Africa, the team at Caffeino is armed with a state-of-the-art La Marzocco machine and can create milk-based coffee with cow milk, lactose-free, almond, coconut, soya, and oat milk. 

Food-wise there are a range of all-day breakfast dishes and the bread is made in-house at the Caffeino bakery. There are also a variety of handmade pastries, sweet treats and desserts.

Mocaffeino (25AED) a blend of fruity and acidic 100% Arabica coffee with a rich and sophisticated dark chocolate made with 33% West African cocoa. Expect an intense and delicious chocolate taste.

Every customer that purchases the 22AED Voters Combo Tasting Menu will be automatically entered in Caffeino’s raffle draw, which will be done on November 29th and features special Caffeino prizes including breakfast for two. 

Caffeino will also be running three complimentary specialty coffee-themed workshops during the campaign on the 14th, 19th, and 24th of November at 2-4 pm. The workshops will cover measuring and grinding for specialty beans, water boiling, and how to use brewing equipment, specialty beans 411, V60 and coffee tasting, Chemex and coffee tasting, French press and coffee tasting, and presentation and serving methods. CULTURE CAFE

The brainchild of Emirati nationals Hassan Habib Al Sayegh and Hamad Abu Shousha, Culture Cafe is located within the Abu Dhabi Youth Hub.

Created to celebrate Emirati culture with a key focus on the importance of coffee in Emirati society, the main aim at Culture Cafe is “connecting the past, present, and future through culture and coffee.”

Opened in late October 2019, the Culture Cafe logo draws its inspiration from the Arabic font that was featured on the cover of an Ittihad newspaper published in 1971 sharing the iconic story of the inauguration of the UAE union. The founders used this approach to “reflect our Arabic roots but also its a reflection of the culture that the brand aims to provide.” 

The team at Culture use Espresso Lab beans and offer a variety of milks including diary, soya, oat and almond. Certified master barista Viola Ndgire has over a decade of experience in specialty coffee and is a latte art champion and the instructor for all of Culture Cafe’s coffee workshops.

Rahash Latte (27AED) featuring a double shot of espresso with special beans, creamy, frothy milk of the customer’s choice, and the finest halawa, drizzled with a nutty chocolate ring presentation.

CUPITAL CAFE

Founded in 2018 by Emirati duo Khalifa Al Dheheri and Abdulla Alremeithi, Cupital was created to share the love and art of specialty coffee with the UAE capital. With a key focus on high-quality customer service, coffee beans, environment, and coffee, the team at Cupital use Vesta Coffee Roasters coffee beans.

The baristas use the Slayer Steam X machine alongside Aeropress, V60, Kalita and Chemex and Cupital also has its own line of cold brew. Barista Joemar Bermejo won 3rd place in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi at the last UAE Aeropress Championship 2021 and Cupital co-founder Khalifa Al Dhaheri won 1st place in the Emirate of Fujairah in the UAE Aeropress Championship 2021.

The food offering encompasses brunch, healthy bowls and desserts.

Cupital will host an Instagram Live ‘Talk with the Roaster’ on the 20th of November with Saeed Albalooshi of Elmatador Coffee Roasters. ELIXIR CAFE

Conceptualised by a passionate Emirati specialty coffee enthusiast called Saeed, Elixir’s ambiance is inspired by South Asia’s small, rustic and cosy cafes.

The team use manual brewing such as V60, Kalita, Aeropress and Syphon and also serve Cold Drip and Cold Brew. Plus the folks at Elixir grind their beans (from ELIXIR Roastery and Three Roastery) using the award-winning grinder Mahlkonig EK43. To prepare espresso-based coffees, the baristas start by grinding the roasted beans with a Compak F10 and then extract it with 2 group head prestigious Italian La Marzocco Machine Strada to produce the finest cup of coffee.

ETHR

Nestled on the beautiful sandy shores of Saadiyat, ETHR aims to “reimagine what it means to design, create, serve and host. Offering a unique and one-of-a-kind client experience.” The concept encompasses a studio crafting premium grade lifestyle and wearable goods, alongside a cafe offering specialty coffee, dessert and gelato. ETHR is also passionately environmentally conscious.

Using beans from Archers Coffee and Refill Roastery, the ETHR team features two awarded baristas – Aeropress Champion (Sharjah) Ramona and Dominic, who received 3rd place in the Aeropress Championship for Umm Al Quwain. There are a variety of milks on offer including full fat, low fat and lactose-free dairy, almond, coconut and oat.

#AbuDhabiLovesCoffee Activities

To celebrate #AbuDhabiLovesCoffee, ETHR will be hosting Coffee Workshop and Cupping Sessions. Introducing visitors to the world of coffee and coffee tasting, the workshops will be hosting twice a week for 1-2 hours. Free of charge, the main exercises will be an open opportunity for participants to learn all about coffee from ETHR’s expert baristas, some who are regional champions. Technical exercises where guests can taste different coffee flavours and beans, including the chance to try creating their own latte art.

GESHA SPECIALTY COFFEE

The name ‘Gesha’ is inspired by geisha coffee beans, a type of Arabica coffee that is considered the highest quality of coffee and is the most expensive to buy. At Gesha, the team takes this concept and strives to provide its guests with the highest quality of coffee and service. The team use beans from Archers and Blacksmith and has dairy milk, oat and almond milk for milk-based coffees. 

There is also a full food menu on offer featuring croffles, sweets and desserts, snacks and sandwiches.

Hot Marshmallow Latte (29AED) crafted with Gesha’s own house-made marshmallows (which are made fresh daily). The latte is flavored with vanilla marshmallow and topped with a piece of freshly-toasted marshmallow that you can dip inside the hot latte for extra sweetness or enjoy eating it solo.

Every Friday during the #AbuDhabiLovesCoffee campaign (Nov 8-28) the team at Gesha will be asking customers questions themed on specialty coffee and customers that answer correctly will receive special prizes with their orders. 

JET:LAG CAFE

Themed around travel, JET:LAG Cafe offers a variety of reasonably-priced desserts, cakes, and sweet treats alongside ice cream, and açaí, and of course, specialty coffee. The coffee is crafted using Seven Fortunes beans and there are decaf beans available here. Milk-wise JET:LAG offers full and low-fat dairy, lactose-free, almond, and oat.

KAFFIE SPECIALITY COFFEE

Founded by Emirati national Ahmed AlMansoori, Kaffie is a tiny little bolthole located in the Muroor neighbourhood. Named after the region’s old name for coffee, Kaffie focusses on takeaway treats such as açai and pudding boxes, alongside specialty coffee.

There’s very limited seating available (just a few bar stools) thanks to its modest size but the coffee on offer more than makes up for it. There are over 13 different beans available – many of which are locally sourced from favourites such as Seven Fortunes. For filter coffees Kaffie has various origins like Ethiopian Hambella, Hamasho Village, Ethiopian Halo Bertit, Rwanda Fugi all from Archers Roastery. Barista Daniel is a latte art artist and there are a variety of milks available including full fat diary, low fat, and lactose-free, almond, coconut, soya and oat.

Pumpkin Spice Latte (22AED) featuring the iconic spice blend of nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice, and ginger with Kaffie’s special blend coffee.

MEERA CAFE

This homegrown gem brings Emirati cuisine inspired by beloved grandmothers coupled with specialty coffee. There is a full food menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, alongside dessert and various sweets and baked goods. 

Meera uses 100% Arabica beans from local roastery Gold Box, using a blend called Bond Street with sweet, chocolaty tasting notes, a hazelnut aroma, and a smooth finish. There are a variety of milks on offer including full fat, low fat, and skimmed dairy alongside soy. Plus lead barista Naoumi is talented and passionate.

Every Sunday during the #AbuDhabiLovesCoffee campaign Meera Cafe will be hosting complimentary latte art classes from 2-5 pm. Customers will be able to learn all about coffee and the skills of latte art from Meera’s expert team of baristas on the 14th, 21st, and 28th of November. MIRZAM CHOCOLATE MAKERS

Homegrown, Emirati-owned bean-to-bar chocolate connoisseurs Mirzam Chocolate Makers first started life in Dubai’s Al Quoz with an impressive chocolate factory and now count the UAE capital as their second home, thanks to this beautiful space at the Qasr Al Hosn site.

The oldest stone building in Abu Dhabi, Qasr Al Hosn provides an opportunity to discover the rich history of the UAE and the ruling family. And now, thanks to Mirzam, you can fuel all of that cultural exploration with some world-class chocolate and caffeine…

Mirzam offers a retail space to shop the latest chocolate collections and a striking specialty coffee bar, complete with freshly baked cookies, brownies, and other treats from Mirzam’s small-batch bakery. There is also gelato and soft-serve by local maker Canvas and tartines made with locally-sourced produce topped on thick slices of Dubai-based Birch Bakery’s sourdough bread.

Coffee-wise, Mirzam uses Goldbox Roastery’s specialty coffee beans and Mr Sujan Baniya is the noteworthy barista here – you should try his flat white. Mirzam also uses La Marzocco Strada AV coffee machine and milks available include Al Ain full fat, Alpro coconut, and All Goods barista oat milk.

MORSEL CHOCOLATES

Selling over 50 varieties of homemade signature chocolates, Morsel was inspired by combining the best single-origin chocolate with the best single-origin coffee. Founded in 2020 by two Emirati women Mariam and Dhabya Al Remeithi, Morsel uses beans from the UAE-based Grandmother Roastery and offers a variety of choices of single-origin beans from Ethiopia, Nicaragua, Colombia, Brazil, India, El Salvador, and the finest Panama Geisha. The team barista team is led by Jude and uses a La Marzcocco AV machine. There are a variety of milks available for coffee including fresh full fat, low fat, and skimmed dairy, oat, soya, almond, coconut, and lactose-free milk. There’s also a full food menu and ample desserts.

NOTES CAFE

Founded by Emirati national Saoud Al Shamsi, Notes Cafe was created as an ode to celebrate Arab culture – encompassing both good coffee and good food and bringing friends and families together to create memories in a cosy, welcoming space.

The folks at Notes use coffee from the Man vs Machine roastery and have a variety of specialty-grade single-origin beans on offer. Barista Allan Sayuman won 2nd place at the Latte Art Throwdown and the team uses a La Marzocco Strada machine.

There’s also a full food menu encompassing options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus cheat-day-worthy desserts.

Notes Latte Art Champion available throughout the period November 8-28 – Everyone ordering the 22AED Voters Combo will have a chance to their own latte for the regular coffee and will be guided and judged on their skills. At the end of the #AbuDhabiLovesCoffee 2021 campaign Notes Cafe’s owner and head barista will judge the best latte art novices and there will be prizes given to first, second and third place.

OUD CAFE

Oud Cafe is a contemporary coffee house offering the hospitality of Arabic culture with its oud melodies and smell, coupled with specialty coffee. Featuring a modern Arabic-inspired design, Oud Cafe also offers desserts along with pastries, sandwiches, and ice cream.

The team uses Puchero Roastery (Spain) beans and a custom-made Sanremo Cafe Racer Renegade Edition coffee machine.

PENTAGON SPECIALTY COFFEE

Pentagon Specialty Coffee is an Emirati specialty coffee and desserts concept, inspired by the number five: there are 5 Emirati co-founders, 5 elements of coffee, and 5 senses of the coffee experience. All of Pentagon’s coffees are carefully chosen considering the 5 elements of third-wave coffee – sweetness, body, flavour, aroma, and finish.

The team at Pentagon also believes the coffee experience should not rely on taste alone, but rather give the coffee aficionado an experience that satisfies all 5 senses. The barista team uses a custom-made all-black, award-winning Victoria Arduino Black Eagle machine and there are a variety of high-grade single-origin coffees available.

Pentagon Spice Latte (28AED) Winter in a cup! A deliciously rich latte made with all the flavors of winter to keep you warm on the cooler (or air-conditioned) Abu Dhabi nights.

  • Sensory Quiz: Do you have the sensory skills of a Barista? Challenge your sensory skills by participating in Pentagon’s free skills quiz, running every day, for a chance to win a free 100AED voucher at the end of the campaign. Dates: Every day between 4-10 pm, on request.

SOFT

Soft first started life as a homemade Gelateria and supplier in 2015, then following a rebrand in 2018 became Soft Coffee & Gelato. Founder Darwish Al Qamzi is passionate about providing Abu Dhabi with a high quality experience – from the ambiance, to the coffee, to the food. Food-wise Soft offers breakfast, lunch, dinner and a bounty of desserts and it also supplies its coveted gelato to a variety of cafes and restaurants in the UAE. 

Coffee-wise, Soft uses a variety of specialty beans some of which are sourced locally. There’s something to suit all tastes and the baristas are experienced and talented – using a Black Eagle 2 Group Head coffee machine, alongside its very own (rare) nitro cold brew machine.

  3. How to keep coffee beans fresh
  4. Dose and grind calibrations 
  5. Channeling (causes and their impact on coffee during the extraction)

SPIN COFFEE

Situated in Marsa Al Bateen Marina, Spin is a specialty coffee shop using local-roasted Windmill beans, an Italian-made La Marzocco machine, and a variety of hot and cold coffees. Food is limited to pastries.

TAKUMI

Takumi is a contemporary bakery and cafe inspired by Japanese culture and born in 2018. Takumi serves a variety of Japanese pastries alongside specialty coffee and teas. Takumi Bakery and Cafe is named after the Japanese term for an artisan or a master craftsman – ‘Takumi’, and the folks here aim to wow you with their creations. TURF CAFE

Founded by Emirati national Mariam Saeed, Turf Café was born out of the desire to have a casual neighborhood café where people could gather without pretense, to relax with friends and colleagues, and learn about coffee in a comfortable way.

Alongside its specialty coffee, Turf has an all-day breakfast menu and casual fare, including its best-selling oval bagel. The beans at Turf come from local roasters that source ethically and use fair trade practices – including Dubai’s Nightjar, Cafe Rider Roastery, Night Creatures, and a mix of other award-winning regional and international roasters. Leo is the head barista at Turf, and the team includes senior barista Annura and junior barista Melwin. All of the baristas at Turf are knowledgable, skilled, and latte art experts.

Turf’s goal is to be active in the community, promote inclusivity and foster environmental stewardship, as well as giving local start-ups and artists exposure.

November 16, 17th, and 18th – 3-Day Latte Art Course. Running for one hour a day (5-6pm) on the 16th, 17th, and 18th of November, this latte art course will have you mastering the skills of latte art in no time and is priced at 165AED per person. VOID CAFE

Void was founded by Emirati national Sager Alnuaimi and opened its doors at Emirates Park Zoo in October 2020. Head barista Frank and the team use a Slayer machine and source the best local specialty single-origin beans from a variety of local roasteries. Alongside its specialty coffee menu, there’s also a full breakfast menu, desserts, pastries, and smoothies. The space is slick and minimal and there’s a pretty little outdoor seating area, which is ideal for Abu Dhabi’s beautiful winter season.

Basic Barista Training is available for 2-hour slots between 12noon and 4 pm every day during the campaign (November 8-28). The training will cover basic coffee knowledge, how to make the perfect coffee, the characteristics of a good espresso, the teachings of mixed coffee flavors, and more.
