Cinema Akil Dubai first started life in 2014. The brainchild of Emirati founder and managing director Butheina Kazim, the art house cinema began as a nomadic concept, bringing films from around the region to special pop up events, travelling around the city. Then in the summer of 2017, Butheina and her team tested a semi-permanent pop-up at the A4 Space in Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz. It was a great success, and planted the seed for what Cinema Akil has grown to become over 12 months later, after it officially opened the doors to its own dedicated location (also within Alserkal Avenue) in September 2018…
Screening films daily weekends and weekdays, the space is big, but cosy and welcoming. The screen room features chairs that were rescued from the old Golden Cinema in Bur Dubai before it was knocked down, and seating is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
Cinema Akil isn’t just for catching a movie either – the team are keen to welcome folks who want to come and enjoy the space to relax and work when the films aren’t playing too. The space is also available for meetings and private events, and Cinema Akil will continue their pop-ups all over the region and their mission to promote and spread awareness around talented local and regional filmmakers.
Cinema Akil’s new home is also where you can find the folks at Project Chaiwala (more on that here), serving up their iconic chai and now, for the first time: dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner to visitors and cinema goers.
Insider tip: At present, tickets are only available at the box office. Discover the film schedule here.
