Owned by a wife and husband duo, Maiz Tacos started life as a humble food truck (which is still in operation for special events) and eventually opened its first bricks and mortar location at Dar Wasl Mall in 2018. Fast-forward to 2019 and the Mexican gem opened this chic restaurant in Dubai’s bustling JLT.

A 15-minute walk from the metro, Maiz Tacos is located beneath the Japanese gem Daikan Ramen. The space is beautiful. Think pretty pastel colours, minimal furnishings, Pinterest-worthy signs and corners, and an inviting semi-open kitchen. There’s ample room for small and large groups to sit for lunch or dinner.

What sets this gem apart from the other Mexican restaurants in the city is that the team at Maiz is committed to providing 100% preservative-free food. Therefore everything is made with 100% fresh and whole ingredients and most of the menu is gluten-free. This means that the food served at Maiz is a lot more “clean-tasting” than you may have experienced with some other Mexican joints. At times we did find that it lacked the saltiness and flavour punch we were craving, but we did appreciate the fact that what we were eating was fresh and wholesome. The best things we sampled were the Guacamole with Chips (35AED), which were crunchy, not oily and moreish (if lacking a little saltiness), the El Jefe Taco with its tender 6-hours slow-cooked marinated pulled Angus chuck and fresh chimichurri and the La Tierra vegan tacos, which are crafted with delicious roasted cauliflower and sweet potato, guacamole and an (extremely spicy) cashew Arbol salsa. We weren’t blown away by the Her Burrito (60AED), which was a little bland (especially the chicken) and heavy.

For dessert, we opted for the Churro Ice Cream Sandwich (35AED) which is drizzled with Lotus. Unfortunately, this treat spent a little time on the kitchen counter before it reached us, so by the time we got it the ice cream had melted. Nonetheless, it was tasty, however, the churro itself was a little hard and we can’t be sure if that was because of the wait at the counter or it is how it naturally comes.

Drinks-wise Maiz Tacos JLT is alcohol-free and offers a range of soft drinks. We opted for the Fresh Agua of the Day (20AED), which was a mix of hibiscus and citrus and super delicious and refreshing.

Insider tips: Free wifi and charging stations make it a great spot to get your emails done whilst you eat.
