Mama Zonia Dubai: A homegrown jungle-inspired bar, lounge and eatery in the Dubai Marina

Inspired by an “exotic urban jungle”, Mama Zonia is full of wild and wonderful aesthetics including a mango tree, beautiful hand-painted murals, tropical-inspired wallpaper, an abundance of green foliage, and a huge bird cage complete with (faux) peacocks. Divided between a bar/lounge area and indoor and outdoor dining, the water-facing terrace offers wonderful views of the surrounding Dubai Marina alongside pretty tiled tables (one of which features a portrait of the iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo).

The Raw Bar offers a glimpse at the live ceviche and sushi-making action, whilst the (fully licensed) cocktail bar drew its inspiration from Havana’s legendary ‘La Floridta’ and offers a plethora of drinks including larger-than-life cocktail sharing bowls that your Instagram will love.

Food-wise, the menu offers “multicultural sharing plates” with Mexican, Japanese, Asian, and Latin American influences. There are ample options for vegetarians and vegans alongside tempting creations using meat, poultry and fish.

The Huntr visited at sunset on a Friday evening (which was the perfect time to catch a spectacular view of the sun setting over the Dubai Marina). To start, we shared the Tiger Prawns (69AED) from the ‘Skewered’ section of the menu – the prawns were perfectly cooked and the salsa vinaigrette was a wonderful, punchy addition. From the ‘Maki Roll’ section, we opted for the Spider Roll (70AED for 8 pieces), which includes a delightful mix of soft shell crab, tuna, topico, avocado, cucumber and spicy mayo, and the Green Papaya Salad (43AED) with pomegranate, peanuts and a touch of oyster sauce. Divine. For the main event, we ordered two dishes. Firstly the BBQ Miso Chicken (155AED), which comprises a whole chicken cooked in a smoking wood oven with Amazonia coals. Tender and flavourful, we loved this dish – which is perfect to share and goes fabulously with the Sweet Potato Fries (35AED), which come with a spicy pineapple mayo. And secondly, the Hot Ceviche of Sea Bass, Prawns, and Octopus (155AED) with yucca, habanero, fresh coriander and bonito flakes. Mouthwatering. Don’t miss it.

The end a delicious meal on a sweet note we ordered the BBQ Banana (50AED), which is glazed with aged rum and served with allspice ice-cream and the Wild Amazon Chocolate Pot (48AED), which comes with a passion fruit sorbet and was a resounding favourite.

Drinks-wise we tried and loved the Mamatai (60AED) new vodka and pineapple expression, Golden Poison (60AED) a blend of stone fruits, tangy passion fruit, sweet mandarin (our favourite) and the Gardenia Blue (55AED) agave tequila, fresh avocado juice, a creamy melange of spices and honey with the tanginess of Brazilian limes.

Mama Zonia is the perfect spot for date night, ‘going out out‘, birthdays, impressing clients with something different, and enjoying lunch or dinner with friends, family and loved ones. There’s also a Ladies Night and Friday Brunch on offer (more details below)

Insider tips: Dress to impress. Smoking allowed on the terrace and at the bar/lounge area (the other indoor areas are non-smoking). Mama Zonia runs a Ladies Night between 6pm and 1am every Tuesday and ladies receive two complimentary beverages, 50% off main courses and an additional two beverages when buying a main course. There is also a Friday Brunch (between 1 and 4pm) that is humorously titled ‘Please Don’t Feed The Animals’ with various packages available. Reservations recommended especially for big groups and busy periods (Tuesday night, Thursday night and Friday Brunch).
