Tucked away above Basta! by David Myers, Poppy Dubai offers a unique speakeasy concept that’s altogether different from the run-of-the-mill bar scene…
To access Poppy by David Myers, you need to enter the Basta restaurant and take the staircase up to the first floor. From here, you will find a unremarkable door with a small sign that says ‘Private’. Swing open that door and the mediocrity ends. Wow. The first thing that strikes you about this bar is just how pretty and romantic the lighting is. Think dimly-lit corners, flickering with hundreds of candles and Edison lightbulbs. The bar itself has a real homely fill, it is set low so you can see all of the cocktail-making action, and flanked by a series of interesting vinyl records, bottles upon bottles, and more delightful, mood-setting, flickering candles.
The Huntr visited Poppy after enjoying a Wednesday dinner at Basta. It was quiet, but in a wonderful way – it’s quite a treat to have such a gem (almost) to yourselves, and on the quieter nights (such as the night The Huntr visited), it’s the perfect place to have an intimate romantic date or catch up with friends undisturbed.
The brainchild of David Myers (a.k.a. The Gypsy Chef), drinks-wise Poppy is all about cocktails. Mixologist maestro Sam Ross of Milk & Honey fame is behind the concoctions here, which are handmade, fresh to order each time and feature the finest ingredients. There is also a wide variety of spirits, wines and beers on offer for those who prefer something a little more straightforward.
Insider tip: Poppy is busiest on a Thursday evening and weekends.
