If you’re a long-time Huntr, you may recall a certain gem that we raved about called She Burger, who delighted us with her unique homegrown business and super-tasty, cheat-day-worthy creations? Back then (circa 2013), you used to have to send a WhatsApp at least 24 hours in advance to place an order for takeaway and collect the burgers from the Emirati founder’s house. Sheikh Hamdan was also a big fan and She Burger rocketed to UAE foodie fame, attracting thousands and thousands of Instagram followers and orders. Fast-forward a few years, and in late 2017 Shaikha Eissa took the plunge and opened her first proper restaurant at Dar Wasl Mall.
The ambience at She Burger at Dar Wasl Mall is slick and urban, yet cosy. There are circular booths for intimate lunches and dinners, plus tables for smaller groups and an outdoor seating area when the weather permits. The menu is divided between sharing starters/appetisers, burgers, sides, salads and desserts. There are also an array of soft drinks, milkshakes and mocktails on offer at this alcohol-free homegrown gem. There’s one vegetarian burger on the menu plus several wholesome salads that are vegetarian and vegan-friendly – but let’s call and a spade and spade and say this isn’t the place you head when you want to eat something healthy and light. This is a cheat day destination.
The service is faultless. The staff are polite, knowledgable and prompt. We loved hearing that the burger buns are all made in-house, that the beef is all hand-ground in-house and that the chicken is always fresh and never frozen.
We suggest ordering the Ponzu Butter Corn on the Cob (45AED) – the Japanese ponzu butter sauce completely changes the taste of the corn and it is delightful. The Canon Balls (55AED), which are popcorn chicken-like beauties, smothered in a sweet and spicy sauce. Divine. Plus the Holy Grail (52AED) was as great as it sounds (crispy fried potato, bacon, cheddar, beetroot, jalapeno) and very Instagrammable. And it would be a crime to miss the Crispy Beef (63AED), which sits on a bed of creamy, garlicky mashed potato and will be in our daydreams for weeks to come (it might have been the best thing we ate at She Burger).
On to the burgers. The bread and butter of She Burger’s business. The gorgeous little things that started it all. These are easily some of the best burgers you will try in the city. We loved the spicy Buffalo Chicken (39AED), the Biggy Munch (43AED) – a beef burger complete with crispy potato, onion, cheese and the Short Rib Slider (29AED).
Sweet tooths will also love any of the three desserts on the menu, which are all made in-house – we sampled the Red Velvet Milk Cake (47AED) and the Say Cheese (47AED) cheesecake.
